All over the world, a resurgence of tabletop games has been evident with the revival of classics such as Monopoly and Memory, and the proliferation of board game-based restaurants and cafes.
In spite of the popularity of online, mobile and video games, tabletop games remain a stable player in the toy industry. With this in mind, manufacturers are always on the look-out for new concepts and innovation techniques to further improve models and better compete with screen-based game makers.
What makes a board game good? Designer Peter Neugebauer says that a good game does not take too long to finish, preferably ending within 60 minutes. Interaction is also a key aspect, with every action affecting all the players, encouraging them to concentrate on each person's turn rather than wait for his own. The setup should be such that it is difficult to predict who the winner will be. Finally, a high-quality graphical representation of the game scenarios is important, making it easier for the participants to immerse themselves in the story.
Currently, familiar titles, including Monopoly, Memory and Rummikub, remain popular and meet the abovementioned criteria. In the card board game area, microgames are on the rise, led by titles such as Love Letter and Tides of Time.
Games that encourage communication and cooperation among players are also trendy. An example of which is Pandemic Legacy, which encourages the participants to work together to stop the spread of epidemics. Krazy Wordz, meanwhile, allows the user to come up with fictitious names and words that could be associated with particular categories.
DIY board games are also available.
