LED display panels surpass their LCD counterparts in brightness, contrast, color accuracy, energy efficiency and life span, and are expected to replace them in many applications. Their brightness allows them to be used outdoors for store signs, billboards, destination signs on public transport vehicles and variable-message signs on highways. For indoor use, these panels offer a higher contrast ratio than projectors, making them a better alternative for video walls as well as advertising and information screens in public spaces.
To leverage these advantages and boost adoption, manufacturers are working to achieve a finer pixel pitch and realize enhanced resolution.
In China, more suppliers are targeting pixel pitches below 2mm to produce P1.8, P1.6, P1.5 and P1.2 LED display panels. Widely available at present are P2 to P10 units, which have 6,500 to 9,500K color temperature, 1,920 to 3,840Hz refresh rate, 160-degree viewing angle, -30 to 60 C operating temperature and more than 100,000-hour life span. There are indoor and outdoor units, with the latter having an IP65 or IP67 rating.
SMD LEDs used are from foreign and domestic providers, depending on buyers’ preferences. The usual sources are Cree, Epistar, Samsung, Nichia, San’an Optoelectronics and Refond Optoelectronics.Most Chinese manufacturers accommodate customization requests, with orders based on these accounting for between 30 and 50 percent of their shipments. They ensure products comply with industry safety standards such as CE, FCC, EMC, RoHS and UL.
