To meet diverse requirements in orders for PCB assemblies, Chinese manufacturers continue to invest in state-of-the-art production and test equipment, sourced both domestically and abroad. This is to increase their presence in the high-end electronics market, mainly industrial robotics, automotive electronics and IoT devices.

Current capability spans placement of components using through-hole and SMT processes on various PCB types, from single- and double-sided to rigid-flex, flexible and multilayer boards. As small as 0201 components can be mounted, with minimum pin spacing of ICs and BGAs as tight as 0.1mm and maximum precision of IC assemblies at ±0.01mm. For assembly checking, bridge testing, AOI, X-ray, and in-circuit (ICT) and functional circuit (FCT) testing are commonly used.

As for PCBs, ICs and other electronic components, they are usually purchased from domestic or foreign sources. Some PCBA companies offer their own PCBs to their customers.

Chinese suppliers cater mainly to the demand for PCB assemblies in the consumer electronics, communications, medical, automotive and industrial markets. As such, they ensure products are RoHS-compliant and manufactured in facilities with ISO 9001, 14001 or ISO/TS 16969 certification.

China is one of the largest production bases for this category, with a total market scale that could reach $56.4 billion by the end of 2023, according to Gongyan Consulting.
