Power tools are used in building sites, factories and home workshops. They are usually sorted by what they do and by their power source.

Drilling and fastening tools include drill-drivers, hammer drills, rotary hammers and impact drivers, while under the cutting category, there are circular, reciprocating, miter, table, band and jigsaws. Tools used for grinding and finishing include angle, bench and die grinders, random-orbit and belt sanders as well as polishers.  Routing and shaping tools such as routers and planers are used for joinery, edge profiling and smoothing timber. There are also specialist tools including heat guns, oscillating multitools, nail guns, concrete vibrators and wall chasers.

By power source, there are corded, cordless pneumatic, hydraulic and petrol-powered tools. Brushless motors are now standard in midrange and professional cordless tools. They are more efficient, run cooler and last longer, and their electronics allow features such as soft start, kickback control and speed settings for different applications.

Matching tools to applications

Home and light DIY: A 12 to 18V drill-driver, jigsaw, random-orbit sander and small angle grinder cover most household jobs.

Carpentry and joinery: Circular and miter saws, routers and planers are ideal and have dust extraction.

Construction and renovation: Rotary hammers, wall chasers, large angle grinders and reciprocating saws are the go-to tools. High-voltage cordless types now rival corded ones in this category.

Metal fabrication: Angle grinders, magnetic drills, band saws and die grinders are handy.

Industrial assembly: Recommended are pneumatic or electric nutrunners with transducer-controlled torque, which matters for traceable joints in automotive and aerospace work.

Safety and electrical standards

The main international safety standard is the IEC 62841 series, Electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools and lawn and garden machinery – Safety. Part 1 sets general requirements. Parts 2-x cover handheld tools such as drills and grinders, Parts 3-x cover transportable tools such as table saws and Part 4 covers garden machinery.

IEC 62841, which is gradually replacing the older IEC 60745 and IEC 61029 standards, covers protection against electric shock, heating and fire risk, mechanical strength and guarding and abnormal operation

There are related international standards as well.

  • Electromagnetic compatibility: CISPR 14-1 (emissions) and CISPR 14-2 (immunity)
  • Batteries: IEC 62133-2 for lithium-ion cells and packs. Battery safety for these tools is also addressed within the IEC 62841 framework.
  • Pneumatic tools: ISO 11148 (safety), ISO 28927 (vibration measurement) and ISO 15744 (noise measurement)

Vibration and noise

Long-term use of vibrating tools can cause hand-arm vibration syndrome. ISO 5349-1 and -2 set out how to measure and assess human exposure. Manufacturers declare vibration emissions using test methods in IEC 62841 or ISO 28927, together with an uncertainty value, K.

In Europe, Directive 2002/44/EC sets a daily exposure action value of 2.5 m/s² A(8) and a limit value of 5 m/s². For noise, Directive 2003/10/EC sets action values of 80 and 85 dB(A) and an exposure limit of 87 dB(A). Product noise is measured using the IEC 62841 annexes and acoustic standards such as ISO 3744.

Regional frameworks

EU: Tools carry CE marking under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, which Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 replaces from January 2027. Other rules include the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU, RoHS 2011/65/EU and the new Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. Harmonized standards are published as EN IEC 62841 and EN 55014.

US: Product safety certification is usually to UL 62841, carried out by Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories. Cordless tools are also certified to UL 2595, with battery packs to standards such as UL 2054 and UL 62133. On the workplace side, OSHA rules 29 CFR 1910.243 and 1926 Subpart I govern tool use, and FCC Part 15 covers radio-frequency emissions.

Canada: CSA C22.2 No. 62841, harmonized with UL

China: Compulsory CCC certification based on the GB/T 3883 series, which closely follows IEC 62841/60745

Japan: The Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law (PSE marking)

Australia and New Zealand: AS/NZS 62841 and 60745 adoptions, with RCM marking under the Electrical Equipment Safety System

Many countries in other regions adopt IEC standards directly through national bodies or require certification through the IECEE CB Scheme, which lets manufacturers use one set of test reports in many markets.

Manufacturing quality

Reputable manufacturers run quality management systems certified to ISO 9001 and usually add ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety). Production lines include routine safety tests such as dielectric strength (hi-pot), earth continuity and functional checks. These are backed by factory inspections from certification bodies such as UL, TÜV, Intertek and CSA. Industry groups such as the European Power Tool Association (EPTA) publish agreed test procedures, for example for measuring impact energy, so that specifications can be compared fairly between brands.
