Reduced power consumption and carbon footprint, brighter light output and a much longer life span are a few of the benefits that are increasingly making LEDs the first choice when it comes to sourcing streetlights. As many parts of the world implement more sustainable means of urbanization to curb the threats of climate change, manufacturers have also continued to innovate LED streetlights to enhance their sustainability. In such case, the addition of solar panels proved to be most useful and practical - as they have made streetlights capable of charging their own batteries.
Image by Photocurry from PixabayLED lighting has some compelling financial and environmental arguments on its side.
Nonprofit organization The Climate Group says that if it were used worldwide for all public infrastructures, "LED technology could save over 1,400 million tons of CO₂ and avoid the construction of 1,250 power stations." This would represent a huge step forward, considering that 20 to 40 percent of a city's energy bill can be credited to public lighting and lighting accounts for five percent of global CO₂ emissions.
The decision to replace 250,000 existing streetlights with LEDs has saved New York City $14 million in maintenance and energy costs from 2015 to 2017, according to lighting and electrical products provider Facility Solutions Group. Furthermore, by switching to LEDs, 735 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions can be stopped and lighting power consumption will be reduced by 52 percent globally.
Sourcing professionals in the market for streetlights can expect consistent demand as sustainable urbanization keeps moving forward worldwide. Until and unless a similar lighting technology is invented, offering the same energy efficiency while maintaining a higher luminous flux than older lights such as incandescent bulbs, standard fluorescent tubes and CFLs, LEDs will continue to lead the way in public lighting.
