Fiber-optic technology is preferred for its higher bandwidth, faster transmission speed, longer distance, and inherent immunity to EMI and harsh weather conditions, compared to traditional copper-based cabling. Fiber-optic cables are smaller and lighter as well, but coaxial cables are still widely used as they are less expensive to install and less susceptible to damage due to crushing and bending. As such, they remain present in the communications, energy, medical, traffic and industrial fields.

For the foreseeable future, Chinese cable manufacturers will continue to nurture this category to fill existing market demand. Their emphasis is on making further improvements in product reliability, stability and life span, with some companies following the US military specification MIL-C-17 in addition to CE and UL standards.

In mainstream supply are baseband types with an impedance of 50ohms for digital signal transmission, and wideband units with 75ohms for analog applications. RG-8 and RG-58 are the most widely available in the baseband subcategory, and RG-59 in the wideband segment. All are RoHS-compliant.

Chinese suppliers generally source copper conductors, and PE, aluminized Mylar and PVC respectively for insulation, shielding and outer sheathing, from domestic providers.

Copper costs rose in the past 12 months, but most cable manufacturers kept their product prices unchanged to stay competitive. Companies interviewed by Global Sources are optimistic that copper quotes will stabilize in the months ahead.
