COB LED modules offer higher brightness and lower power consumption than SMD types. They also have enhanced heat dissipation owing to the substrate used, which may be aluminum or ceramic. This thermal efficiency allows the tight mounting of chips while phosphor coating provides added protection from moisture, water, dust, UV rays and impacts. These advantages make them increasingly used in small-pitch LED displays, especially in P0.93, P1.25 and P1.56 types. Industry analysts say that COB technology will replace SMDs in this application.
In a report released by China Merchants Securities, shipments of COB LED modules increased by 2.5 times in P2.5 and below displays in the third quarter of 2023 over the same period in the previous year. This trend, expected to persist in the next two years, has been driving Chinese manufacturers’ R&D efforts toward small-pitch, high brightness and power COB LED modules.
Mainstream COB LED modules from Chinese suppliers bond multiple chips on round, square or rectangular substrates. These typically have 25 to 100W rated power, 4 to 42V rated voltage, 100 to 130 lm/W luminous efficacy, over 80Ra CRI and 2,000 to 10,000K color temperature. The choices in terms of emitted color are wide, with natural, cool and warm white, red, green, blue, yellow and orange the most common. These optoelectronic components suit indoor and outdoor lighting and displays. They are UL-listed, CE-approved and RoHS-compliant.
The components used in COB LED module production include LED chips, PCBs, bonding wires and adhesives are sourced from foreign and domestic companies. For LED chips, manufacturers usually turn to Cree, Philips, Samsung, Epistar, Osram, San’an, Silan, HC Semitek and Epilight.
LED chip costs went down in 2023 but may increase in the months ahead and impact prices.
