Improved durability and heat distribution drive product development.

South Korea makers of cookware sets emphasize the use of aluminum and stainless steel, leveraging the metal types’ respective thermal conductivity and strength. For surfaces, they use materials, which enhance products’ nonstick features and overall abrasion resistance.

Karamco Co. Ltd focuses on the development of better cladding and coating technologies. It combines stainless steel and aluminum in bonded multi-ply releases, which include models with a three-, five- or seven-layer construction. To make finishes less prone to damage, the supplier adds diamond powder to the Teflon synthetic resin. Its range has ceramic-based sets as well. “We are exporting scratch-resistant nonstick stainless steel cookware sets, which apply surface processing and coating methods patented in South Korea and the US,” said Daniel Kim, Karamco’s deputy department head.

Se Young Metal Co. Ltd includes the safety factor on the agenda. Its die-cast aluminum models feature a five-ply ceramic coating. The surface material used does not have toxic components such as lead and cadmium, and emits no toxic fumes when overheated. For greater durability, the maker utilizes metal and coating with more than 8H rating, surpassing models in the market typically with 4 to 5H. This ensures better scratch and wear resistance, and a longer life span. For the cookware base, materials with a 3.5T thickness are adopted to help distribute heat more evenly and thoroughly, and withstand denting.

Silvat Co. Ltd achieves durability by employing high-purity aluminum sheet with over 97 percent aluminum content. The input is anodized or made compatible with induction cooking, depending on the requirements in the target market.

South Korea manufacturers are releasing models with same-material lids, although heat-resistant reinforced glass types remain common. Se Young said the former is becoming popular. Silvat hopes to take advantage of demand for such products in the Middle East while continuing to offer glass-covered sets. It also has models with handles made of aluminum used in the body. In addition, suppliers are introducing sets with interchangeable lids for added convenience.

External enhancements are likewise covered in makers’ product initiatives. Se Young has developed a 3D pattern coating, while Silvat uses its patented technology to add designs on aluminum cookware.

There are about 50 makers of cookware sets in South Korea, most of which are small and midsize businesses. They export between 40 and 50 percent of output. In the case of Se Young, the ratio is as much as 90 percent, while Silvat’s outbound shipments are only 7 percent of yield. Both send products to Vietnam and Iran, in addition to Egypt for the former and China for Silvat. Karamco’s overseas destinations are China, Japan, Southeast Asia and Europe, and that of Exim Business Co. Ltd are the third region, the US and the Middle East.

More local suppliers are aiming to establish their brands instead of relying entirely on OEM orders. To realize this, makers will continue to enhance molding and coating methods. At present, only a few export under in-house labels.
