Johnson Controls has recently released its Cortana-powered thermostat in the market. Called GLAS, the smart thermostat features a semitransparent touch-activated OLED display and voice control via the said AI assistant from Microsoft. It also boasts an air quality-sensing function. Aside from Cortana, it is also reported that the product can work with other smart voice assistants such as Alexa and Google if the user has Amazon Echo or Google Home devices. Advancements in design and innovative features have put the product in the high-end segment with a $319 price tag.

GLAS’ look is what’s seen to be what might draw some buyers toward it despite the price. Those looking for lower-cost smart thermostats, though, need not worry about other options as thermostat releases are also getting upgrades in design and more innovative features.

In China, for example, thermostats are now getting the smooth touchscreen surface and voice assistant compatibility. A few models also integrate displays that shut off when idle, a feature also present in the GLAS thermostat.

With releases from big brands and Asia suppliers seeming to catch up or be at par with each other in terms of hot features, these types of thermostats could go mainstream fast and soon.
