When people start building a smart home, one of the most obvious products they want is a security camera. There are many camera releases with smart features that can be used through all kinds of smart home devices, but one system that has been conspicuously missing is Apple's HomeKit. Apple smart home users no longer have to feel left out in the rain. D-Link's Omna 180 Cam HD is the first security camera that's compatible with HomeKit to hit the market, according to CNET.
The Omna 180 has a clean, spherical design that should fit in well with any Apple household. The camera lens is at the top and not meant to serve as a hidden camera the way some home security cameras are these days. It still looks good, though, and people shouldn't have any problem setting this on a desk in plain view. The Omna 180 uses a 180-degree lens. This makes it easy to capture anything that's going on in a room with the right vantage point.
Like other smart security cameras, the Omna camera has all the usual tricks, like remote access from a smartphone. The advantage of HomeKit integration is that users can access information like notifications from the camera through Apple's Home app, which unifies a home's HomeKit-capable devices. This remote access includes a live feed and end-to-end encryption.
The Omna 180 sells for $200, which is around what many smart home security cameras cost these days. It's not the most impressive or unique security camera on the market today, but for many, Apple integration is a premium feature worth paying for. Perhaps that will earn Taiwan's D-Link a little street cred among the Apple faithful.
