Alkaline batteries, although nonrechargeable, remain widely used for their high energy density and good performance in both hot and cold conditions. They have a long shelf life, which can be up to seven years unused, and are generally less expensive than other batteries used in common devices such as remotes, toys, flashlights, clocks and wireless computer mice.
Thanks to these advantages, alkaline batteries retain a sizeable global market. They reached $8.32 billion in 2024 and will further increase to $11.46 billion in 2029, according to Hunan Beijiesi Information Consulting.
Manufacturers in China strive for differentiation to benefit from this demand, including in the smart lock segment. One leading player, Nanfu, has come up with AA and AAA batteries using materials that ensure no leakage for up to 15 years, and has applied for four patents for them. The company also installed new production lines in 2024, which started operating in the first quarter of 2025 and would bring its annual capacity to 1 billion alkaline batteries.
Chinese suppliers offer AAA, AA, C, D and button-cell types. These batteries are available in nominal capacities of 1,000, 2,500, 8,000 and 18,000mAh with internal resistance ranges of 150 to 300, 100 to 250, 80 to 200 and 60 to 150mohms, respectively.
Companies source key manufacturing inputs, such as cathode and anode materials, electrolytes, plates, separators and shells, from domestic providers. Material costs are expected to remain stable in the coming months. This trend will ensure battery prices stay at current levels.
