LEDs with domed or flat lenses were the earliest form of this technology and are still widely used in applications requiring high durability or resistance to impact and harsh weather conditions, as well as those needing cost-effective solutions.
In China, such DIP LEDs are available in lens styles such as bullet, short and flat heads and straw-hat shape. They are mainly for signage, displays and advertising screens and come in various emitted colors, which may be single, double or triple. The typical viewing angle is 20 to 140 degrees. Based on electrical properties, the options are 1.3 to 3.6V rated voltage, 20 to 120mA rated current and 0.06 to 0.5W, while the operating life span exceeds 80,000 hours. By size, the usual choices are 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10mm.
Chinese manufacturers ensure their products conform to industry safety standards such as UL, CE and RoHS. For LED chips, they turn to domestic and foreign suppliers such as San’an, Lumin, Silan Azure, Micron, Cree and Philips. Other materials and components come from Chinese providers. LED chip costs rose by 3 to 5 percent in 2023 but are expected to stabilize in the coming months.
