Baby boomers constitute a larger portion of home ownership than younger generations, including millennials, according to the US News and World Report. It is estimated that every day, approximately 10,000 baby boomers become eligible for retirement and the segment is more likely to spend on projects, are less reliant on credit cards, and consult professionals for labor.

With aging come the modifications needed for the home. Popular projects include home safety improvements such as color changes on stair steps, hard surfaces for wheelchairs, adding grab bars, more lighting, widening doorways and switching to nonslip flooring.

Aside from functionality, baby boomers are also interested in improving the appearance of their homes. Outdoor living spaces and open layouts are reconstructed particularly in the South and West. Exterior painting, deck expansion and fence installation are the top projects.
