DJI and Hasselblad are refreshing their medium-format camera drone bundle to one that now shoots 100MP photos. The individual components included in this system are not new, but the companies are bringing them together for a single photography drone package that is likely to be quite expensive, although no price has been announced yet.
For this system, DJI is using its Matrice 600, a $5,000 hexacopter that will be combined with the Ronin MX gimbal and Hasselblad's H6D-100c camera. According to DJI, this is designed for landscape and fine art photography. It is clearly a professional-level device, as it will no doubt price novices out of the market. In addition to the cost of the drone, the Ronin gimbal currently has a $1,600 tag and the H6D-100c camera starts at $33,000.
DJI and Hasselblad made a similar bundle in 2016, but it used the H5D camera, which only takes 50MP photos. DJI invested in Hasselblad in late 2015 and now has a majority stake, according to reports in January. So while this latest drone/camera bundle is not a radical new move by either company, it is the first collaboration since DJI's acquisition. There could be more news from these two companies in the near future, hopefully to the benefit of everyone who loves high-quality photography drones.
