Dongguan has established a comprehensive industrial chain for electronics, from materials, components and assemblies to finished products, over the decades.

A key production hub in China, as of July 2025 the city was home to “over 220,000 industrial enterprises contributing to a trillion-yuan electronic information industry cluster,” according to People’s Daily Online, the information portal of the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party. In 2023, 2,224 of these companies had an annual turnover of $2.85 million, with the top seven realizing a total production value of more than $1.42 billion.

The city’s electronic components sector, in particular, has been doing well in the past several years, buoyed by 5G communication, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), electric vehicle (EV) and smart manufacturing trends. The top three categories are semiconductors, sensors and connectors.

Humen on center stage

As such, manufacturers of cables and assemblies continue to flourish in Dongguan. In Humen alone, there are over 200 suppliers of wires, cables, terminals, wire harnesses, wire materials and production equipment.

They are members of the Dongguan Humen Information Transmission Wires & Cables Industry Association, which was established in 2009 and is one of the first such nonprofit alliances in Guangdong.  This group is responsible for the annual South China (Humen) International Wire and Cable Exhibition.

According to reporting from Southern Metropolis Daily, a total of 120 upstream and downstream manufacturers in this town collectively achieved a production value of $2.41 billion in 2024, posting an average growth of 14.44 percent in the past three years.

With such an ecosystem, Humen earned recognition as a “National Characteristic Industrial Cluster for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises” for its wire and cable industry from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in 2025. This is an upgrade from Humen’s provincial-level honors in 2023.

Dongguan’s key players

Dongguan has attracted both domestic and foreign suppliers of cables and assemblies, with those set up with investment from overseas including Wonderful Photoelectricity and Dongguan Nissen. The homegrown companies include tier-one makers such as Minxing, WCON and Tongbao.

Minxing was one of the top 20 wire and cable makers in 2025 based on its annual revenue, which exceeded $714 million. It has acquired 102 national patents, including eight for inventions. Minxing has a new production base in Dongguan, fully operational since the end of 2023. It was worth $142 million and is expected to contribute to the company’s goal of an annual sales value of $2.14 billion in the coming years.

WCON has been upscaling its operations, spending $71.85 million on a 14,674sqm smart production base in Humen. The facility started full-scale manufacturing in mid-2024. The company is also expanding beyond Dongguan and has invested $36.71 million in a subsidiary in Kunshan in Jiangsu province. This project is scheduled to run at full capacity in the coming months, from which WCON projects to derive a production value of $50 million every year.

Cables & assemblies

Suppliers of cables and assemblies in Dongguan offer a range of types, including electric, fiber-optic, coaxial and A/V as well as wire harnesses. They use domestically sourced materials such as copper, silver, gold, nickel, PVC and PE.

In recent years, they have directed R&D initiatives toward the high end, shifting focus from computer, communications and consumer electronics or 3C products. More companies are turning out new cables and assemblies designed for applications in the fields of AI, IoT, robotics and EVs.

Linoya, a large enterprise and an important player in Dongguan’s cable and wire industry, has zeroed in on the market for new energy vehicles. Its automotive high-voltage wire harnesses now account for over 60 percent of the company’s total sales value. The company will continue to develop new wires and cables used in advanced automotive transmissions and power distribution systems.

Electronics manufacturing in Dongguan

Dongguan remains one of the world’s most important hubs for electronics manufacturing. The city benefits from excellent logistics infrastructure, including proximity to major ports and transportation networks. Since the 1980s, Dongguan has attracted massive foreign investment, transforming from an agricultural region into a manufacturing powerhouse.

The electronics industry in Dongguan is characterized by a dense network of factories ranging from large multinational contract manufacturers to small and medium-sized enterprises that form intricate supply chains. Major global brands and their suppliers have established operations in the city, drawn by the concentration of skilled labor, specialized component suppliers and efficient production ecosystems. This clustering effect means that manufacturers can source virtually any electronic component locally, reducing lead times and costs. Dongguan has also developed strong capabilities in precision manufacturing, mold making and surface finishing, which are essential for producing high-quality electronic products.

In recent years, Dongguan has been going through significant transitions driven by rising labor costs, environmental regulations and technological change. The local government has actively promoted industrial upgrading, encouraging factories to adopt automation, robotics and smart manufacturing technologies. Many companies have invested heavily in modernizing their production lines to maintain competitiveness as some lower-value manufacturing has shifted to countries with cheaper labor.

Additionally, Dongguan is working to move up the value chain by fostering research and development capabilities and attracting higher-tech industries, positioning itself not just as a manufacturing center but as an innovation hub within the Greater Bay Area economic zone.

According to People’s Daily Online, Dongguan’s foreign trade demonstrated resilience in the first five months of 2025, with total import and export value reaching approximately $85.95 billion, representing a 17.4 percent year-on-year increase. The city’s electronics sector remains central to this performance.
