Agriculture is seen as one of the big growth areas for commercial drones. People in the industry have been hoping for regulations to be loosened enough for them to put drone technology to use, particularly in surveying land and crop dust. An Oregon-based startup now wants to show how drones can be employed to plant seeds, although the company does not have agriculture specifically in mind.

DroneSeed is actually geared toward providing services to forestry companies and non-governmental organizations. The group’s latest innovation is a drone system designed to drop seeds in select area to combat deforestation. The company said forestry is lagging technologically behind farming. According to DroneSeed, forest restoration is still largely manual, presenting an opportunity to upend the industry.

DroneSeed's system works by firing seed capsules into the ground at exact coordinates. The UAVs are also capable of spraying to protect plants from invasive species, and the system will help monitor yields and plant health.

Large drone companies are already preparing for a future of UAV workers on farms and helping monitor forest fires. DJI offers an agricultural UAV and a thermal imaging camera for drones that can be used to aid firefighters. A seed-firing feature might be something DJI would want to look into in the future. In the meantime, other China companies in the business of agricultural drones are likely to see the opportunity presented here.
