The company estimates that 90 percent of world's population above age 6 will have a mobile phone by 2020.
Ericsson’s latest quarterly mobility report is out, and it comes with some rather startling conclusions about the mobile phone market. In 3Q 2014, Ericsson estimates that not only will there be 400 million new mobile subscriptions in 2014, but that there will be a further 2.4 billion more in the next 6 years or 9.5 billion by 2020, representing annual growth of 5 percent. Ninety percent of the world’s population over the age of 6 will have a mobile phone by 2020, according to the report.
One of the interesting nuggets—and the report as a whole is well worth a read—is while LTE subscriptions are only 400 million globally in 2014, this is expected to balloon to 3.5 billion by 2020. This represents a 45 percent compound annual growth rate and by far the fastest-growing category of mobile subscription. In 2014, LTE subscriptions account for about 5.4 percent of the global market; in 2020, Ericsson estimates that LTE subscriptions will make up about 36 percent of the market.
In addition, mobile data use is expected to grow by 25 percent every year, in part driven by LTE subscriptions but also simply by the ways that people use their smart devices. This suggests that video, already a large user of mobile device bandwidth, will be an even bigger part of mobile device use in the future. What this means is that not only will smartphones, tablets, and wearables with fast data connections become even more in demand, but graphics processing power on those devices will also need to increase significantly.
