A protruding camera lens and unattractive bumpers may be good for case makers.
Power bank sellers are expected to reap gains with the launch of Apple's iPhone 6
The reviews for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are out, and the unsurprising primary takeaway from them are that the phone is, as expected, bigger and better than the previous versions. Of more interest to accessory makers are that the phone’s battery capacity is confirmed to be about equal to previous iPhones and that a case may be even more appealing on the iPhone 6 than on previous versions.
Part of the reason for the case's extra desirability is that many reviewers noted that the phone's plastic stripes (designed for better antenna reception), are quite unattractive. In addition, the camera lens protrudes from the phone slightly, and the phone does not sit flat on a surface. As The Verge's David Pierce noted, "[A case] helps obscure the unsightly plastic strips, it make the otherwise slick phone a little easier to grip, and it compensates for the awkwardly protruding camera lens on the back, which prevents the phone from sitting flat on a table." Several reviewers noted that the phone's body was quite slick, and while it was attractive, made it very easy to drop.
As for the battery capacity, power banks may be essential, and if the phone sells as well as Apple hopes, may help to drive power bank sales to developed markets even more. As Joshua Topolsky of Bloomberg noted, "I experienced several days during the review period where I barely made it to the charger before the phone lost power." This represents a significant opportunity for power bank sellers. Ideally, the power banks should match the iPhone's style as much as possible for more premium banks – perhaps Li-poly batteries could allow for better styling.
