South Korea suppliers of electric juicers revitalize product development to stay ahead of the competition and take advantage of growing demand from increasing emphasis on health and wellness. They underscore quality based on the components and materials used, citing shift in market preference to performance from price and design.

Manufacturers such as Best Green Life Co. Ltd are investing in more tests to ensure appropriate motors and decelerators are employed. NUC Electronics Co. Ltd turns out its own UL-listed motors, which have a reduced failure rate and can last up to 10 years.

Angel Juicer Co. Ltd stresses BPA-free input for pieces that come in contact with food. The maker adopts 100 percent stainless steel for its nontoxic attribute. NUC taps engineering plastic for its durability besides making parts dishwasher-compatible.

Some suppliers are focusing on advanced types, including low-speed and multifunction juicers, to appeal to the global upmarket. The former kind operates below 80rpm to extract thicker fruit and vegetable juice without producing heat, which degrades taste and nutrients.

Major local player Hurom Group Corp.’s latest HH Series of slow juicers adopts a second-generation squeezing technology, which increases the amount of obtained juice while reducing dregs. “The number of screw rotations per minute for this has been lowered to 40 from 80, allowing for more fresh and natural-flavored juice,” said Kim Young-Jin, the company’s assistant marketing manager. The models have a 500mL drum capacity, and are easy to disassemble and clean.

NUC’s new low-speed models highlight ease of use as well. These have feeding tubes measuring 77 and 80mm, require no precutting and can handle unpeeled produce. The supplier is likewise incorporating features such as interchangeable juice screens that enable the device to make ice cream and smoothies. It continues R&D to boost product durability and performance. The last covers capability to process a wider variety of food, and extract more juice and pulp.

Besides slow juicers, there are basic units, which typically use high-speed centrifugal separation of 3,000 to 35,000rpm to grind fruits or vegetables. The next type called the green vegetable juicer adopts South Korea’s traditional millstone method, which entails slow squeezing of fruits and vegetables.

Between 10 and 15 suppliers make up the line in South Korea, the majority of which are small and midsize businesses. Angel and NUC export mainly to North America, Europe, Australia and Japan. The former also sends shipments to Russia and the second to China and the Middle East. Best Green Life’s key overseas destinations are Europe and Australia.
