Applications in the new energy and industrial control fields are driving demand for film capacitors with high voltage and capacitance. Such advanced passive components are currently produced by major industry players based in Japan, Europe and the US.

China, the largest market for this category, hopes to catch up, with more suppliers boosting R&D efforts to diversify their predominantly entry-level and midrange selections. Only Xiamen Faratronic is currently producing high-voltage film capacitors, which include metallized polypropylene types in rated voltages of 160, 250, 400, 630, 1,000, 1,600 and 2,000V, capacitance range of 0.00056 to 15µF and tolerance of ±2 to ±20 percent.

Polypropylene, polycarbonate, Mylar and polystyrene film capacitors widely used in household appliances, consumer electronics, communications and power equipment, and electronic products are all available in mainstream supply in China. These capacitors have 63 to 500V rated voltage, 3pF to 10µF capacitance range with tolerance of ±5, ±10 or ±20 percent, and are made based on CE, KC, RoHS, UL and VDE standards.

To widen their product catalogs and broaden their customization range, many companies will turn out variants that use metallized dielectric film.

Chinese manufacturers source metal foil, plastic film, epoxy resin and other materials from domestic and foreign providers as required by customers. The cost of these inputs is expected to remain relatively stable for the rest of 2023 and keep product prices at current levels.
