Switzerland's Phonak has announced the first mainstream Li-ion battery-powered hearing aid. The company uses a new kind of Li-ion battery technology called Palio 3, which has allowed it to make the first rechargeable hearing aid that can run for 24 hours on a single charge. The product is called the Audéo B Receiver-in-Canal.

Other rechargeable hearing aids have been made before, but Phonak's breakthrough is in using Li-ion batteries. The batteries allow the hearing aid to fully recharge in three hours, much faster than other similar products, or fast-charge in 30 minutes for six hours of use. The company's hearing aid has a charging case, which works similarly as those employed in some completely wireless earbuds. Phonak is also selling a power pack that plugs into the charging case and can recharge the hearing aid seven times.

Battery technology has not evolved much over the years. For the most part, the only way to improve battery capacity is by putting in a larger battery, which is a problem in products the size of hearing aids.

Still, as Phonak describes it, users have been waiting for Li-ion batteries to go mainstream in hearing aids. Until a new advancement in battery technology makes it to market, Li-ion remains the best rechargeable battery technology available.
