China's selection of brushless motors has models with rated power of 1 to 7,500W, and input voltage of 5, 12, 24, 36 and 48V. There are 100 to 40,000rpm, and 60 and 120-degree variants.

A further categorization is by rotor construction. Types with an outer rotor boast relatively low cogging torque. These operate at lesser duty cycles or rated current, owing to the location of the stator windings. Inner counterparts have the advantage of heat dissipation, which has a direct impact on torque, and reduced rotor inertia. The latter kind dominates local makers' output.

Between sensored and sensorless units, the former account for over 80 percent of production. Sensored models adopt mainly Hall-effect position sensors for the components' lower cost. For high precision dynamic positioning, makers offer versions with optical or magnetic encoders.

Brushless motors adopting NdFeB magnetic materials lead output, and those with AlNico and ferrite account for the rest.

Regardless of type, releases have 80 to 90 percent efficiency, and built-in safety features against undervoltage, overcurrent and short circuit. These can withstand more than 20,000 hours of operation. The last is based on the bearing life span.

Companies modify products' voltage, current, power, speed, torque and dimensions to match diverse requirements.

Suppliers use local enameled copper and electric wire, magnetic materials, metal, PCBs, passive components and MOSFETs. They usually purchase bearings from Japan. For chips in the built-in electronic drivers of integrated models, makers rely on key foreign providers such as TI, Freescale, Fairchild and Atmel.

The cost of manufacturing inputs is expected to stay steady until year-end, which will help companies keep prices competitive despite climbing labor expenditure.
