Mainland China makers of Bluetooth modules target manufacture of high-performance, low-power, long-range, and ultrafast and -small units.

The rise of the Internet of Things, and the smart home, security and manufacturing technologies is expected to drive mainland China's production of ultrasmall Bluetooth modules with improved performance in the years to come.

At present, Bluetooth/Bluetooth Low Energy 4.0, 4.2 and 5.0 modules make up the local range, with the first two accounting for the majority of total shipments. The first suits applications that require reduced power dissipation but at low cost, while the 4.2 version offers improved transmission speed and privacy protection. For advanced uses such as the Internet of Things and smart home products, the latest 5.0 specification provides a more expansive coverage.

In the next one or two years, the recently released Bluetooth 5.1 standard is predicted to attract the attention of domestic makers.

Encouraging product initiatives is the growing market of Bluetooth-enabled devices. The global shipment is forecast to reach 5.2 billion units in 2022, according to Bluetooth SIG.

Mainland manufacturers usually obtain chips from foreign providers such as Nordic, Skyworks, Qualcomm, TI, Broadcom and ST. Other key inputs, including PCBs and passive components, are sourced locally unless otherwise required.

Component costs did not change much in the past year and kept Bluetooth module prices stable. The same trends are projected in 2020.
