Manufacturers of wireless charging modules in China are focusing on the rollout of fast-charging types with a rated power above 20W. They are eyeing the intersecting 5G and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that will drive trends in mobile and wearable electronicssmart home systems, robotics and electric vehicles. From this, the expected product announcements will be highlighting more functionality, which corresponds to a higher need for power.

Some Chinese suppliers have started introducing 20W-rated wireless charging modules with 12 to 15VDC input voltage, 50 to 150kHz frequency and 10mm maximum transmission distance. On the receiving side, output voltage is 5 to 12VDC and maximum output current 1.6A at 12VDC, 20W.

Mainstream selections currently have 5 or 7V input voltage and 15W maximum rated power. These are compliant with Qi, PMA and A4WP standards, with Qi units dominating supply.

Companies are continuing to offer customization services. This is because they are generating a sizeable amount of business from this strategy as such orders represent between 30 and 70 percent of total shipments.

Domestically sourced wireless charging coils, magnets, PCBs and passive components are used, while chips are also sourced from foreign providers. Input costs increased slightly in 2020, forcing some manufacturers to raise product prices by up to five percent. Not much fluctuation is expected throughout 2021.


75 to 80% efficiency
