Makers of chip capacitors continue to boost output for 0201, 0402 and 0603 MLCCs. Major players pursue the development of 008004 kinds.
Mainland China's chip capacitor lineup consists of aluminum electrolytic and tantalum types in cylindrical casing, and MLCCs that use NPO, X7R, Z5U and Y5V dielectric materials and come mainly in 0201, 0402 and 0603 sizes. The latter kind dominates shipments.
The MLCC selection also includes 0805, 1206 and 1210 units, while 01005 variants are mostly from large makers and 008004 types are still at the development stage. Shenzhen Eyang, one of the mainland's major MLCC suppliers, is expected to release 008004 models in the next one or two years. The industry's smallest, 008004 capacitors come from foreign companies such as Kyocera, Murata and Taiyo at present.
Demand for chip capacitors has been on steady rise, with that for MLCCs seeing the highest growth in the local line.
Globally, production has been having trouble keeping up, resulting in four-month delivery lead times and eventually leading to a supply shortage in 2018. The situation has started to ease toward the end of 2019 as industry leaders, including Yageo and Murata, complete their production expansion. Fenghua Advanced, Taiyo Yuden (Nigata-ken) and Samsun Electro-Mechanics will finish theirs in the months ahead, and Kyocera (Kagoshima) and Taiyo Yuden (Guangdong) in 2021.
The price of chip capacitors increased by 10 percent due to the supply challenge and higher material costs. This trend is expected to persist but the adjustment in quotes may go down to 5 percent.
