Gallery View: Smart electronics boost production of AMOLED displays

Apart from the established applications in smartphones and wearable devices, the rising popularity of smart TVs is leading manufacturers of AMOLED displays in China to include larger variants in R&D and production. Most shipments are currently in small sizes, specifically 0.95 to 4in, but units up to 10in in the midrange segment and larger displays are expected to see an increase in demand in the near future.

The mainstream selection includes monochrome and full-color round and rectangular screens with a wide color gamut, high contrast ratio, low power dissipation, sunlight readability and ultrathin form. These are available in pixel resolutions of 120x240, 128x128, 272x340, 320x320, 390x390, 600x800, 720x1080 and 1080x1920.

Based on the backplane used, a-Si AMOLED displays dominate the output of Chinese suppliers, followed by LTPS OLED units. LTPO displays, which are a hybrid of LTPS and IGZO technologies, are projected to become hot in the market in the next few years. Some smartphones have already adopted these displays for their fast refresh rates and low power dissipation. Expectations are high that the soon-to-be-released iPhone 13 will have LTPO from Samsung and LG Display.

Key materials and components used in the manufacture of AMOLED displays, such as chips, polarizers, ITO films, substrates and adhesives, come from domestic or foreign suppliers as required. Some companies raised product prices by up to five percent due to slightly higher material costs in 2020. Rates are expected to stabilize in the months ahead.

1.46in, 128x128 pixels

The JOA146128R1 is a 1.46in AMOLED display from Dongguan Jingjin Optoelectronics Co. Ltd with 128x128-pixel resolution, 262,144 colors, 70 or 90cd/sqm brightness, 10,000:1 contrast ratio and free viewing angle. Panel size is 33.5x33.5x1.61mm. The unit, with an SPI or parallel interface, uses an SSD1351 driver IC and has ≤10µs response time. Operating temperature is -40 to 80 C.

Ltd has 416x417-pixel resolution, 350cd/sqm typical brightness, 16.7 million colors, 10,000:1 contrast ratio and 80-degree viewing angle. It uses an RMRM69091 driver IC and operates in -20 to 60 C. Module size is 35.45x35.45mm.

The supplier requires a 100-unit minimum order for delivery within seven days.
