Gallery View: Suppliers emphasize better quality semiconductor materials

The boom in the semiconductor materials market is expected to push mainland Chinese manufacturers to upgrade their products.

Due to the high technology involved, most manufacturers in mainland China offer entry-level semiconductor materials. Output includes wafers, photoresists and chemical-mechanical planarization or CMP solutions. In the packaging category, there are lead frames, gold wires and substrates.

High demand, however, is expected not only to attract more ventures into this sector but also steer product development toward midrange and high-end types. This is anticipated to boost localization efforts, being undertaken to support the homegrown semiconductor industry and reduce dependence on imported manufacturing inputs.

Wafer materials represent 40 percent of global sales in this segment, and more than half of shipments come from Japan. The top six suppliers, with aggregate market share of nearly 90 percent, are Japan's Shin-Etsu and SUMCO, Siltronic of Germany, US-based SunEdison, South Korea's LG Siltron and GlobalWafers from Taiwan. There is also a virtual monopoly of a few companies in the photoresist, CMP and high-purity reagent sectors.

On the mainland, the key wafer suppliers include GRINM, Zhejiang JRH, Simgui and Zing.

The majority of manufacturers offer 3, 4 and 6in wafers, while larger companies such as GRINM and Zhejiang JRH can produce 8in units and Zing 12in. Most in the photoresist, CMP and high-purity agent segments operate on a small scale.

Raw materials generally come from domestic providers. Costs did not fluctuate much in the past year, keeping prices of semiconductor materials steady. This trend will persist in the near term.
