The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected the ongoing global chip shortage. Various factories that produce CPUs, graphics cards, SSDs and computer subsystems were forced to shut down, thus negatively influencing the supply chain. Supply greatly decreased but demand drastically increased. Employees started working from home and building their own home offices, which created an unprecedented surge in chip demand from consumers. In addition, Millennials and the Gen-Z youth have turned to live streaming and video games. Thus, interest in upgrading one’s graphics card for better performance in gaming, streaming or photo and video editing has become a trend. According to JPR, Q3 2021 saw the GPU market's growth boom to 101 million units.

Unfortunately, purchasing brand new graphics cards has been difficult for consumers. Attributing 25 percent of graphics card shortage are scalpers who use bots to purchase them, plus cryptocurrency mining. According to Business Insider, graphics cards’ GPUs are used for their raw processing power to perform non-graphics work such as crypto mining. High-end graphics cards can perform sophisticated mining processes in the hunt for crypto coins.

Nvidia’s CEO and other industry leaders anticipating a more prolonged chip supply drought into 2022. Jon Peddie of JPR points out that a stabilized supply chain won’t be possible until the end of 2022. Home office workers and gamers “will likely struggle to get the latest hardware for the foreseeable future.”

With the high prices and low availability of such, this is where Global Sources comes in. Here at our platform are thousands of verified suppliers offering highly in-demand graphics cards, ready for sourcing.
