China is one of the largest production bases for heat sinks, providing access to a range of options in terms of materials and surface treatments for various applications.
Widely available are types made of copper and aluminum, although other metals can be used when required. They can have a polished, anodized, sandblasted, sand-sprayed, degreased, plated, passivated or powder-coated finish.
Suppliers can match specifications for use in consumer electronics, computers, communication equipment and vehicles. This is as they continue to adopt new materials and techniques to further improve product efficiency. Ceramic is one such material, with properties of high insulation, EMI absorption, corrosion and oxidization resistance as well as low thermal expansion coefficient. However, such heat sinks are more expensive and require a more complex production process.
Other manufacturers have ventured into diamond heat spreaders, which use a sheet of synthetic diamond. Henan LiLiang is one company already doing so, while Huawei has patent applications on its own technology.
The material offers 2,000W/mK thermal conductivity, which is 13 times that of silicon and four times that of silicon carbide or copper. As such, GPU-on-diamond is considered the future trend in semiconductors. From a $37 million market in 2025, diamond heat spreaders are expected to reach $15.2 billion in 2030, posting a stupendous 214 percent CAGR, according to Kaiyuan Securities.
Still, this technology is not likely to replace heat sinks in all applications, as the latter will remain a cost-effective option and both can be used in combination.
