Bags from the iconic French luxury brand Hermès Birkin are more valuable than gold or stocks, a study by Baghunter.com reveals.
Comparing three different types of popular investments, the online handbag consignment marketplace found that the Hermès Birkin bag outperforms S&P 500 and gold.
Birkin handbags' value has increased by an average of 14.2 percent YoY during the 35-year period. It has never decreased, and has risen steadily and consistently, unlike those of the S&P 500 and gold, which have fluctuated over the years. The handbag's value surge peaked in 2001 when it jumped 25 percent while the lowest ascent was 2.1 percent in 1986.
2015 was also a record-breaking year for Hermès Birkin bags, when a pink crocodileskin handbag was auctioned for $223,000 at the Fashion Week in New York City. The value was the highest-ever recorded for a single handbag sold at an auction.
