Time has named it one of the 25 best inventions of 2015, but self-balancing scooters, more commonly known as hoverboards, first caught everybody's eye 30 years earlier when Marty McFly rode one in Back to the Future II.

While real-life hoverboards do not completely match their movie counterpart, for one, the current designs do not actually hover, these Segway/skateboard hybrids are changing the way people look at transportation. PhunkeeDuck co-founder Maxx Yellin told Time that hoverboards "could evolve as a new form of transportation for cities and colleges."

PhunkeeDuck is one of more than 20 companies in the US alone making different versions of self-balancing scooters for retail.

On the wholesale side, GlobalSources.com offers an expansive selection of self-balancing scooters and electric self-balance drifting scooters from suppliers in the Greater China region.

One model is designed specifically for children 5 to 13 years old while a Bluetooth-enabled model is controlled by an app.
