IGBTs and modules are widely used in applications requiring high voltage and current capability, low conduction loss and quick response, including electric vehicles, solar power systems and industrial equipment.
In China, such discrete components are available with a withstand voltage of more than 600V, current rating of over 10A and frequency exceeding 1kHz, with other parameters achievable on request.
To reach more markets, Chinese suppliers continue to work on producing more high-end IGBTs. A related initiative has enabled StarPower to acquire AEC-Q101 approval for its automotive-grade IGBTs recently. A first-tier company within China, it ranks sixth in the global IGBT market for solar power systems.
Manufacturers usually source chip rectifiers, PCBs, shells and pins domestically. But when specified, the top chipmakers they turn to include European leaders such as Infineon and STMicroelectronics, as well as homegrown companies such as Silan and BYD Micro.
Chip costs, which rose by 10 to 15 percent in the past year, are expected to remain on an upward trend and result in higher IGBT prices in the coming months.
China’s billion-dollar IGBT market is projected to keep growing at a two-digit rate. It reached $3.4 billion in 2025 from $3.1 billion the previous year or a 10.7 percent increase, according to Shenzhen-based AskCI Consulting.
