Pieces with simple adornments dominate selection. Earrings, necklaces and bracelets lead the line.

India makers of beaded jewelry are focusing on austere pieces with minimal embellishments. With material costs rising between 10 and 20 percent in the past year, this strategy allows companies to cut spending and offer competitively priced models.

Earrings, necklaces and bracelets dominate the line. Dangler versions lead the first category. Most releases come in a single-layer design with a combination of small and large beads. These use a metal chain or leather cord. Loop and chandelier types are popular as well.

The majority of necklaces also have one layer of beads and up to three pendants. Pieces adopt a metal chain with fish hook clasp closure.

Bracelets, meanwhile, are offered in single or multistrand styles with twisting or overlapping bead arrangement. Models use cotton wax or leather cord and may have metal spacers. Some are embellished with one or more pendants.

To differentiate themselves from rivals, manufacturers are employing diverse materials. Beads are often made of metal, wood, bone, horn, lac, agate, acrylic, dyed seeds, fabric, leather, ceramic, terracotta clay, rhinestones, resin, and blown, crackle or frosted glass. These are sourced locally.

Maroon, red, green, turquoise, metallic brown, gold, silver, bronze, copper, and pastel shades of aqua, green, yellow, coral pink and white are the common colors. Many metal releases have an antique bronze or copper, or silver, gold or gunmetal finish.

Beads come in various sizes and shapes. Some feature irregular contours, including fruits, flowers, animals, letters, geometric, surahi, skull and human face. Paisleys, diamond cuts and botanical designs may be engraved, painted, chiseled or in filigree. Patterns are applied manually.

Suppliers are also launching contemporary and tribal styles. The latter often use antique-finished shells, bone and horn to create a crude appearance.

Prices for India-made beaded jewelry range from $0.30 to $10, depending on the materials, sizes, workmanship and volume of beads.

Low-end releases utilize small glass, acrylic, clay, seeds, ceramic and lac beads. Models come in solid colors and a single-layer design with metal spacers and chain. These are quoted at $0.20 to $2.

Midrange versions are made of wood, bone, horn, metal, crackle or frosted glass, shell, mother-of-pearl and agate in large sizes. Patterns are chiseled, engraved, enamel- or foil-painted, or in filigree. Most products are multilayer designs priced between $2.10 and $5.

High-end beaded jewelry adopts metal, leather, wood, frosted glass and semiprecious stones. Models are oversized multilayer pieces with handpainted, engraved, chiseled or embossed patterns. Some have a metallic finish. Releases go for $5.10 to $10.

There are an estimated 2,000 beaded jewelry manufacturers in India. More than one-fourth ofthese suppliers are exporters. Large enterprises number about 50 and have a monthly capacity of 100,000 pieces. Approximately 300 are midrange businesses that can produce 50,000 models every month. The rest are small suppliers with a monthly capacity of 5,000 to 10,000 beaded jewelry every 30 days.

Makers are situated in Moradabad and Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh, Jaipur in Rajasthan, Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, Kohima in Nagaland, Mumbai and Delhi.

The US, the UK, Japan, Italy and Germany are the main export destinations. Central and South America, France, Canada, South Africa, Singapore, Lebanon and Australia are the secondary locations.
