The IPC market is further evidence that specialized computer systems remain a bright spot in an otherwise slowing computer industry.

The world market for IPCs by vertical (Image: IHS)
The industrial PC market is expected to regain momentum, according to a new report from IHS. The market saw a 4.2 percent increase in 2015, but this is expected to accelerate to 5.8 percent in 2016 and more than 6 percent through 2019. The largest segment of the industrial PC market by revenue was panel PCs, but box IPCs made up the largest segment by units shipped in 2015.
The largest region for IPCs is Europe, the Middle East and Africa with 37.2 percent of the market or $1.25 billion in revenue in 2015. Asia is a close second with 35.7 percent and $1.2 billion in revenue. IHS expects slowing economic growth in China to affect the IPC space there, but India is the fastest-growing market for IPCs and will continue to be through 2019. Southeast Asia is also seeing high growth, leading the Asia Pacific region to a CAGR of 6.3 percent from 2014 to 2019. Transportation and infrastructure make up the largest non-industrial market for IPCs, which is expected to see a revenue CAGR of 9.6 percent during the same period. This market is predicted to continue to be strong in China, India and other emerging economies.
Specialized computers continue to be important for the market. As PC sales decline generally, many manufacturers have turned toward specialized computer systems. The gaming PCs segment has been successful in the IPC market, although it is not as large as other areas such as medical and transportation and infrastructure. High performance and dedicated machines are likely to become increasingly important to the PC market.
