Wireless technology has paved the way for home automation, enabling remote monitoring and control of utilities for convenience, security and safety. To ensure continuous power, hardwiring remains necessary, especially when using existing connections for smart devices. This applies to lights, light switches, electrical outlets, smoke detectors, thermostats, doorbells, locks and cameras as well as appliances and home electronics. The last includes TVs, computers, speakers and audio systems.

To keep the electrical wiring network organized, safe and protected, junction boxes are used. These are made of noncombustible materials such as metal or plastic, with the former usually cast iron, steel and aluminum and employed for heavy-duty applications. Wiring boxes for residential installations are typically based on ABS or PC as both are lightweight, durable and corrosion-resistant, with those intended for outdoor settings having additional features of dust and water resistance.

As an essential part of electrical wiring, junction boxes have amp, NEMA and IP ratings.

Growing application market

In addition to the commercial, construction and industrial sectors, the market for junction boxes benefits from the increasing popularity of home automation. “Smart home technologies require a network of electrical boxes to connect the various devices and appliances in a home,” according to Reed Intelligence. The research and management consulting firm forecasts an 8.6 percent CAGR between 2023 and 2031.

Examining trends in the smart living industry, there has been a significant increase that can contribute to greater demand for junction boxes. Statista reported the smart living market reached $39.4 billion in 2017 and jumped to $104.4 billion in 2021, posting a 27.26 percent CAGR. It exceeded $120 billion in 2022 and is projected to hit $207.8 billion by 2026.

Based on shipments in 2022, IDC said that the top categories were video entertainment, household safety, smart lighting and smart audio, with shares of 33.9, 21.6, 13.3 and 10.8 percent respectively. In the same year, smart living applications were present in more than 30 percent of households in Europe and North America. In the US and UK, this figure exceeded 40 percent.

In China, the smart living market stayed at about 15 percent in 2022 but is expected to grow faster in the coming years. From over 220 million smart living devices shipped in 2021, the volume rose to 260 million in 2022 and is on track to reach 330 million by the end of 2023, according to AskCI. For 2026, the forecast is more than 500 million units.

China’s manufacturing industry for junction boxes is anticipating a similar trend. Many suppliers are planning to raise their production capacity in the near term. Huizhou Sanzhishou Technology Co. Ltd is looking to do so by 5 to 10 percent in the next two years based on rising orders.

Junction boxes from China

Junction boxes made in China are mostly shipped from factories in Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, with the remainder coming from the southeastern cities of Shenzhen, Dongguan, Zhongshan and Xiamen. Their key export destinations are Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region.

The leading suppliers in China include domestic companies such as Bull, Delixi, CHINT, Simon and Opple, and international players Schneider, Panasonic and Siemens. The rest of the manufacturing pool are small and midsize Chinese enterprises.

Widely available junction boxes from Chinese companies are made of ABS or PC in various colors. Units with a lock and water-resistant versions can be sourced, with the latter having an IP55, IP65, IP67 or IP68 rating. All have dust, corrosion and shock resistance features to ensure a long life span.

Most manufacturers accommodate orders based on custom specifications. They guarantee their products are up to industry standards, such as CE, UL and RoHS.

For materials, companies follow the buyer’s preferences. The costs are expected to remain stable through 2024 and keep prices of junction boxes unchanged.
