Knocki is a novel way of controlling smart devices around the home. Image source: Knocki
When the smart home is controlled, it’s by voice or by screen, whether that means a dedicated home hub or mobile device. Startup Knocki, however, has introduced a new product that allows the user to control a variety of systems via touch, or at least a knock or two.
Knocki is a disc that can be attached to any surface and is linked to smart devices within the home. The user can then set up various commands, and knock once to turn on the lights in the room and twice to turn them off or two rapid knocks to skip a song playing on a connected sound system, for example.
Users can customize the knocking pattern if they don’t want guests to be able to access smart home functions, a potential pitfall of wall-mounted screen control systems.
The Knocki does not have to be on the surface of an object to be able to be used. As long as the device can detect the vibrations of the knock, it will still work. It could therefore be mounted on the underside of a table, for example, keeping it out of sight. It can also pick up vibrations on a wall, which would allow the device to be mounted at shoulder height for an adult but still can be accessible for a child when they knock on the wall nearby.
The device went on sale in September and was priced around $100.
