LED Modules for Lighting, Displays

LED modules – whether used independently or as components – have broad applications in lighting and displays. They integrate DIP or SMD LEDs and come in configurations for indoor or outdoor installation.

In China, widely available are monochromatic, two-, seven- and full-color types. They mostly use SMD LEDs that are low-power or 0.3W and below, medium-power or 0.3 to 0.5W, and high-power or 1W and above to meet requirements in lighting, backlighting, displays and advertising signs.

These LED modules are usually rated at 12V, and have a beam angle of 120 degrees and an operating temperature of -20 to 60 C. For outdoor installations, there are water-resistant versions, with IP65-rated ones the most common.

Chinese suppliers generally accommodate requests for any specifications, orders based on which represent 30 to 60 percent of their shipments, according to companies interviewed by Global Sources. To enhance their customization capability, these companies will continue to develop LED modules with higher reliability.

For the LED display market, they have small-pitch and flexible modules on the agenda as these types are expected to become popular in the next one or two years. Shenzhen Royal Display Technology Co. Ltd is among those that have introduced flexible LED modules for outdoor digital advertising.

Chinese manufacturers source components and materials such as LEDs, PCBs and frames from domestic and foreign companies. Some produce their own LEDs, with the rest turning to major Chinese providers that include Foshan Nationstar, Hongli Optoelectronic, Refond and Wenrun. The cost of production inputs has been stable, keeping LED module prices almost unchanged. This trend is anticipated to hold through 2023.
