LG Electronics is set to present at CES 2017 a line of next-generation smart home appliances that get smarter overtime.
Incorporating deep learning technology, units are reported to be able to understand the users and execute desired actions by first gathering and studying perceived information about the owner's lifestyle. The process of learning is continuous, and further helps the appliance develop new and more efficient solutions to daily problems.
Among the appliances that will be unveiled is a robotic vacuum cleaner that can recognize objects by creating surface images of the room. With this map, the appliance can avoid obstacles, and distinguish a human from a large object or furniture. LG will also unveil a new line of CordZero vacuum cleaners at CES 2017.
Refrigerators are also getting a smart upgrade with models that can analyze the owner's appliance usage and eating patterns, and perform services based on predicted human activity. For instance, it can activate a sterilization system automatically to avoid food spoilage when a change in temperature or humidity is sensed.
LG's deep learning air conditioner also gathers data on the daily behavior of the homeowners, and predicts which room will need cooling at specific times of the day.
Washing machines, meanwhile, are able to learn about human activities and environment conditions to provide an optimal cleaning setting. For example, in areas where there is excessive calcium carbonate in the water, the unit can adjust the amount of water and temperature automatically to soften the effects of hard water on clothes.
Deep learning technology, according to LG president Song Dae-Hyun, is the next phase in the evolution of smart home appliances.
