A science toy lets children build their own switches and electrical circuits

Light-up toy for the young scientist

A Stanford professor and electrical engineer created a toy that could give children a head start in the world of electronics.

Named after Thomas Edison, no less, the LightUp Edison Kit comes with several components, including a battery, resistor, switch, light sensor and magnetic blocks. The blocks snap together easily, requiring no tools. The other components can then be connected to form an electrical circuit, dimmer, light sensor, buzzer, Morse code beeper and more.

The starter kit does not come with instruction, which may seem like a deterrent for clueless parents. Users, however, can download the LightUp Learning app, which will give children and their parents an X-ray view of how electricity flows.

Elenco Electronics released a similar toy several years ago. This toy is more suitable for older children because to its complexity. The parts are made of plastic and equipped with number labels for easier identification.

Such toys can help kids channel their inner scientist by enhancing fine motor skills, understanding the concept of cause and effect, and having fun while doing so.
