A new kind of wood panel, despite being lightweight is made to be sturdy enough to double as a rigid core.

The panel is formed from raw wood chips that are converted into fiber. A fiber mat is placed into the machine press that transforms it into a core panel in different shapes. The panel can be used on its own or laminated with other materials. Standard size is 4x8ft. Thickness is 3/4in including the face but 5x8ft and 1 1/8in-thick versions are also available. According to its maker, Neucor, the panels are 40 to 50 percent lighter than traditional counterparts. These can withstand fire and be put on top of each other for easier shipping, and installation into cases and exhibits.

The lightweight MDF panel is good as furniture, decoration, interior wall covering and other structures. Looking at the versatility in design of this product, aside from strength, it could gain more popularity as core or base in making more visually pleasing yet durable 3D wall panels.
