France-based Louis Vuitton is the latest luxury brand to combine style with function, with the release of the Tambour Horizon, the company's first-ever smart watch.
Developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, the 42mm watch runs on Android 2.0 and is powered by a Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor. It packs 521MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage, and sports a 1.2in AMOLED 390x390-pixel touchscreen. The smart watch is water-resistant up to 30 and uses a 300mAh battery, which lasts 22 hours on a full-charge.
The Tambour Horizon has some of the functions standard smart watches have such as calls and SMS alerts. It does not, however, incorporate fitness-tracking features considering that no one will probably wear a $2,500 watch when working out.
But what set the Tambour Horizon apart are two exclusive travel-centric apps. My Flight, which allows wearers to consolidate and monitor air-travel information, including departure times, terminal information, reports of delays and time until landing, and City Guide, an intelligent geolocation platform that gives a list of LV-approved restaurants, hotels and hangouts.
The unisex smart watch follows the brand's award-winning Tambour silhouette, and comes in black, gray and brown. There are 60 different strap options to choose from, 30 styles each of both men and women, all priced separately.
Louis Vuitton said this is only the first of a series of tech-smart ventures it will pursue, and future endeavors will likely sport the Horizon moniker.
This is not a the first time a luxury brand has ventured into a the smart watch market. Last year, Switzerland-based timepieces specialist Tag Heuer launched a $1,500 smart watch, the Tag Heuer Connected.
