According to the New York attorney general, Lowe’s Home Centers would be refunding more than $1 million to its customers who were allegedly overcharged for flooring installation fees.
The North Carolina-based firm was allegedly found to have used a deceptive sales practice on 16,000 of its customers. It was said that Lowe’s offered installation of various flooring through third-party contractors at square-foot pricings that were applied to purchased materials, and not for those actually installed.
The attorney general’s office discovered that the company’s installers usually added up to 20 percent excess flooring to actual area measurements where installation fees were based. According to the Lowe’s spokesperson, manufacturers generally recommended that customers purchase more than the measured size to make allowances to match seams and patterns.
Although the home improvement and appliance store agreed to give back $1.1 million and pay $900,000 to the state for the investigation, it denied that it engaged in deceiving practices.
