Samsung, Sony and HTC are holding their breath to see the impact of Apple's new iPhones and the rising popularity of low-cost phones.

While the global smartphone industry as a whole has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past few years, the top makers of Android smartphones – Samsung, LG, Sony, and HTC among them – are being squeezed significantly on the low-end and the high-end markets, according to Digitimes.

On the high end, the annual release of the next iteration of the iPhone has caused Samsung, Sony Mobile and HTC to be conservative in their projections for Q3. For example, Sony Mobile lowered its shipment target by 14 percent to 43 million units, while HTC expects its revenue to decline by around 30 percent.

On the low end, Chinese vendors like Xiaomi, Lenovo and Huawei are aggressively pursuing low pricing strategies combined with higher-quality phones that are eroding the base of previously-dominant manufacturers.
