Despite the huge increase in shipments, analysts say chip companies shouldn’t rest on their laurels just yet as there is much more growth to come.

According to IHS, wireless wearable semiconductor sales are expected to grow by 55 percent over the next four years to reach 95 million units by 2018. Fitness and health wearables are particularly linked to the growth of such chips due to the need for very low power consumption in a very small package. IHS estimates that the market value will increase to about US$2 billion in 2018, from US$1.2 billion in 2013.

At present, the key factors for wireless semiconductors is to lower power consumption without sacrificing functionality. According to IHS analyst Lee Ratliff, the top technology for this is called Bluetooth Smart and the companies currently dominating the market are Nordic Semiconductor, Texas Instruments and CSR. Ratliff said, "They have been the big beneficiaries of this growth, but Bluetooth Smart is a small part of those companies, so it hasn't been earth-shaking yet. The technology is only two to three years old and there is much more growth to come."
