Manual torque tools still relevant, experts say

There are misconceptions that manual torque tools are inferior to cordless power and DC electric tools but the former are still proving themselves useful for various applications.

While electric tools are more fine-tuned and accurate than before, a manual tool is usually present as a backup in the event the electric one conks out, according to a Tohnichi America Corp technician in an article by Assembly Magazine.

Manual or hand-operated static torque tools have their own advantages. First, application of static torque is generally more definite than those of dynamic devices, or motor-driven tools.

Second, manual tools are available in adjustable or preset versions. Preset screwdrivers are useful when the user needs to prevent accidental torque adjustments. There is an increasing demand for wrenches and screwdrivers with overtorque prevention. This feature helps an operator to avoid applying excess torque due to fatigue or awkward handling.

Third, industries across the spectrum use manual torque equipment, from automotive to aircraft and electronic components. Manual tools are used together with electric types for testing new products to improve the durability of the final product. For example, Japan car makers use a power tool to run down a fastener, and then finish off with a manual torque tool.

Lastly, another advantage manual tools have over pneumatic tools is that the latter are very dependent on run time and air pressure, making run-down time longer.
