Rapid adoption of the technology in China and developing markets drive growth.

Driven by the 4G LTE transformation in China and developing markets, MediaTek updated its 4G chipset sales forecast from 15 million to 30 million units, according to company president Hsieh Ching-jiang. The Taiwan-based chipset manufacturer cited a significant increase in demand in China and from Chinese manufacturers who export to other nations.

MediaTek estimates that roughly 30 to 50 percent of its sales come from Chinese manufacturers who subsequently export their handsets, mainly to emerging markets. Lenovo and TCL (Alcatel) are two of MediaTek's largest Chinese clients.

MediaTek expects to ship 350 million smartphone chips this year along with 40 million tablet chips, an estimate that has not changed. Hsieh predicted that as many as 150 million 3G smartphones in China would be replaced by LTE-capable devices this year.
