The meteoric rise of "China’s Apple" eclipses previously-dominant Samsung in China for the first time.

According to research firm Canalys, Xiaomi beat Samsung in units shipped for the first time in China, taking the top spot in the world’s largest smartphone market.

However, there is still a significant disparity in price and revenue – Samsung’s flagship Galaxy series typically sell for more than US$500, while Xiaomi’s Redmi line can go for as little as US$100.

Strategy Analytics also noted that Xiaomi became the fifth-largest global smartphone manufacturer in Q2 2014, selling 15.1 million units globally, though the vast majority of those were sold in China – about 15 million in Canalys’ figures.
