MediaTek, Qualcomm's largest competitor in the smartphone silicon business, has announced its first 16nm SoC, the Helio P20.
The company said the latest chip offers significant improvements in smartphone battery life, performance and power consumption compared with MediaTek's earlier Helio P10, released last year.
MediaTek's use of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s 16nm process technology to make the P20 has helped to lower the power consumption and boost performance of the chip, according to Yenchi Lee, the director of product development in MediaTek's smartphone business unit, in an interview with EE Times.
"The chip is clocked up to 3GHz," Lee said. "The P20 boosts performance from the P10 by about 20 percent on the CPU side."
The chip combines eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores. The new Mali T880 graphics unit, the highest end GPU offered by ARM, is clocked at 900MHz, for demanding video and gaming apps.
"This is one of the fastest A53 implementations in the world," Lee said.
