Geneva, March 2, 2004 – The new CLS is the perfect fusion of two very different characteristics, delivering not only the styling and glamour of a sports car, but the comfort and functionality of a premium car.
The new model once again highlights Mercedes-Benz's technological pioneering status and trend-setting leadership. With sophisticated styling, luxurious interiors and cutting-edge technology, the CLS has shown charisma to her fans.
The overall design of the CLS highlights the characteristics of focusing on the driving experience. The body lines maintain the consistent style of Mercedes-Benz, and combine the sense of movement with the large body, power and elegance, aesthetics and functionality. Conflicting properties come together beautifully.
Interior: Elegant, luxurious and spacious
The interior of the CLS exudes elegance. Attractive colours create a glamorous ambience, and top-of-the-line materials ensure a pleasing interior environment. Soft leather and fine wood trim make up the most important design elements of the interior, with the steering wheel and automatic transmission selector lever covered in leather, and the seat upholstery in an elegant combination of fiber and leather. Consumers can choose from three leather trims and four interior shades.
Handcrafted walnut wood trim adds elegance and sophistication to the interior of the CLS, while the instrument panel trimmed in wood satin lacquer creates a generous, luxurious finish.
The new CLS breaks through the traditional four-door design concept of the coupe, and increases the rear space, so that the rear passengers can enter and exit the compartment comfortably. The luxurious independent seats provide occupants with great freedom of movement. The front and rear seat spacing reaches 829 mm, and the interior width reaches 1468 mm, which even eclipses some higher-level sedans here. The newly developed driver and front passenger seats not only have electric adjustment functions, but can also be equipped with active seat ventilation according to consumer needs, as well as seats with better dynamic support.
Both cutting-edge petrol engines available as an option for the CLS offer exceptional power and torque characteristics. For dynamic driving pleasure, just tap the accelerator with your right foot.
CLS350 is equipped with a newly developed 200 kW (272 hp) V6 engine, and the acceleration time of 0-100 km/h is only 7 seconds (tentative data). The CLS500 is equipped with a 5.0-liter V8 engine that is comparable in power output to a true sports car (such as the Mercedes-Benz SL Coupe), while offering the comfort of a top-of-the-line luxury sedan. The 5.0-liter V8 engine has a power of 225 kW (306 hp) and a maximum torque of 460 Nm. A 7-speed automatic transmission (7G-TRONIC) is also standard on the CLS500. The CLS500 accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 6.1 seconds (tentative data) and has a top speed of 250 kilometers per hour.
Compared with the CLS350, the standard equipment of the CLS500 also adds AIRMATICDC air suspension, luxury automatic climate control system (THERMOTRONIC), 18-inch light alloy wheels and 245/40R18 high-performance tires.
New CLS Safety Systems: Technological Pioneers, Leading the Way
In terms of occupant safety, the new CLS upholds the excellence of Mercedes-Benz, applying a series of Cutting-edge safety technology including: Mercedes-exclusive PRE-SAFE, adaptive front airbags, window airbags, side airbags and seat belt tensioners for each seat and belt force limiter. Among them, the occupant safety advance protection system (PRE-SAFE) has won many awards.
