The trend for miniaturization across electronics applications highlights the need for more chip-size passive components. In the resistor category, demand for SMD types sustains the market’s momentum. From $1.931 billion in 2023, the value is projected to reach $3.17 billion in 2030, according to Shanghai HengCe Consulting.

In China, one of the largest production bases for resistors, manufacturers continue to turn out axial lead and SMD types to serve entry-level and midrange markets. However, because of increasing requirement for smaller components, especially for wearables, smartphones, tablets and medical devices, R&D initiatives have shifted to resistors in even smaller packages.

Guangdong Fenghua Advanced, the country’s biggest maker of passive components, has been providing 01005 SMD resistors in batches and will continue to boost production in the coming years. The current options from Chinese companies are mostly in 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805 and 1206 packages.

Common resistors made in China include carbon-film, metal-film, metal oxide-film, wirewound, thick-film and metal-glaze types. These typically have 0 to 10Mohm resistance, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 or 5 percent tolerance and -55 to 125 C operating temperature. Based on rated power, there are 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 5 and 10W versions that meet UL, CE and RoHS safety standards.

These resistors are made using domestically or overseas sourced components, depending on buyers’ preferences. In the past 12 months, material costs rose, leading to higher prices. But these may stabilize in the months ahead and keep quotes from further increasing.
